A disabled Cumbrian man was verbally and physically abused in the street after being confronted by a group of youths.

The disturbing incident – which police say they are treating as a disability hate crime – happened in Risman Place, in Workington town centre, at 9pm on Thursday, April 13. The victim was a man in his teens, out walking with his partner in the area.

A police spokesman said a female member of the group subjected the victim to verbal abuse, making reference to his perceived disability.

“The female then became more aggressive,” said the spokesman.

“She grabbed a cap from the man's head by force before placing in on her own head. The victim was not injured but he was shocked and distressed by this incident.”

The spokesman went on to say that Cumbria Police will not tolerate crimes inspired by religious, racial, or disability related intolerance.

The female responsible for targeting the victim was aged between 10 and 20, had blonde, greased hair and was about 5ft 5ins tall. She was of medium build.

Police are now studying CCTV images from the area in the hope of identifying those involved. In the meantime, police are appealing for any witnesses who may be able to help the investigation to get in touch as soon as possible.
