Police have cordoned off access to a Carlisle car wash while immigration officers speak to its staff.

Cumbria Police and Home Office Immigration Enforcement arrived at the Shiny Hand Car Wash, in Warwick Road, at 10.30am.

There was high police activity in the area and officers could be seen speaking to staff in the building.

The entrance and exit to the business's forecourt were cordoned off and officers stood guard on the road side.

The investigation was being led by Detective Inspector Craig Smith.

He said: “Cumbria police in conjunction with partners from the Immigration Service today visited premises at Carlisle as part of the human trafficking and modern day slavery week of action.

“The focus of the visit was around safeguarding of workers in addition to identifying other associated offences. A total of 15 people were spoken with during the visit and included a mix of men and women.

"No offences were identified regarding modern day slavery legislation and no offences were identified in terms of immigration offences.”

The visit was part of a national week long campaign Cumbria police has joined to raise awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking.
