THE world-famous Pirelli Rally thrilled spectators and has been credited with driving a £1m-plus boost into Carlisle's economy.

Organisers say  the event – the third stage of the prestigious British Rally Championship – pulled in more than 3,000 spectators, with most likely to have spent splashed out on food and accommodation in Carlisle.

One recent estimate put their collective spending during the event, which kicked off from the city's Pirelli factory in Dalston Road, at £1.3m. Carlisle City Council Leader Colin Glover said: “We're fortunate to have such a long and valued relationship with Pirelli.

"Over the years, it's brought millions into the local economy but you can't really put a price on it.”

The rally, fought out at Kielder Forest, was won by Carlisle based CA1 Sport driver Fredrik Ahlin ( with co-driver Mortem Abrahamsen); second placed was Cockermouth's Matthew Wilson (with Stuart Lowden) and third place went to Carlisle based DMack team driver Elfyn Evans (with co-driver Craig Parry).
