A pensioner has admitted being to blame for the death of a woman on the M6 in Cumbria.

When Colin McLachlan appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this year he pleaded not guilty to an allegation of causing the death of Christine McGuire by dangerous driving.

But 74-year-old McLachlan returned to the crown court today and, during a 10-minute hearing, changed his plea to guilty.

Mrs McGuire, a retired nurse from Stranraer, is said to have been killed instantly in a crash which occurred on the hard shoulder of the motorway at Catterlen, near Penrith, on January 7 last year.

It happened just before 1pm when McLachlan's Nissan Pathfinder collided with the 67-year-old mother and grandmother's Renault Kangoo.

She is said to have died instantly having suffered multiple injuries.

Judge Peter Davies adjourned the case.

McLachlan, of Belmont Crescent, Kilmaurs, Kilmarnock, was remanded on bail, and is due to be sentenced on September 16.

He was warned by the judge that all options, including custody, would be open on that date.
