Police have named the pedestrian who was killed after being struck by a car on a rural north Cumbrian road last night.

Alan Schofield died on the A6071 between Newtown, near Brampton, and Laversdale Lane, in Brampton, after a collision with a VW Golf.

Mr Schofield was 57 years old and was from Newtown.

Police were called to the scene at 4.41pm after reports of a collision between a silver VW Golf, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Longtown and the Mr Schofield.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Specially trained officers are working with the family.

A second pedestrian, a 22-year-old man, suffered minor injuries while the car driver and her seven-year-old passenger were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where they were also treated for minor injuries.

The road was closed until 11pm to allow crash investigation work to be carried out.

The family of the dead man is being supported by specially trained officers.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them on 101.
