A parking crackdown has been carried out at schools across Carlisle.

Police community support officers and civil enforcement officers from Cumbria County Council have visited a number of schools throughout the city to warn drivers of the dangers of illegal parking.

As a result, two tickets were issued to drivers outside Caldew School for parking on double yellow lines.

Another ticket was issued outside Scotby Primary School for the false use of a disability parking badge.

Both PCSOs and civil enforcement officers also visited Brook Street School, Robert Ferguson Primary School, St Bede's Primary School, St Cuthbert's Primary School and Upperby Primary School.

All parents of children at the participating schools were notified in advance as to the operation.

PCSO Mark Nevison said: "The operation has been a success in respect that nearly all road users have parked in a safe and legal way.

"We now live in an age where more families tend to drop their children off right outside the school gates or as close as possible.

"Whilst this is understandable, the schools only have a limited amount of space outside the premises which leads to serious traffic congestion at school drop-off and collection times.

"Most schools have recognizable yellow zig-zag road markings outside the school entrances in various locations and these are there for a reason which is to protect children.

"We hope that this week’s theme of motorists parking safe and legally continues for the safety of others."
