Maryport's Paralympic hero Simon Lawson returned to his old school to share his experiences of the Rio games this summer.

The 34-year-old wheelchair racer was welcomed by pupils and staff at Maryport Junior School for an assembly which was also attended by pupils of nearby Maryport Infant School.

Simon talked about the Paralympic Games where he raced in the men's T54 marathon.

He also held a question and answer session with pupils and showed them his racing chair.

Alex Moore, deputy headteacher, said: "It's been a fantastic opportunity as Simon is an ex-pupil and it's lovely for the children to be inspired by him.

"It was a real honour. The children have been thrilled and wanted to greet him at the gates. They were waving Union Jack flags."

Simon is also a former pupil at Maryport Infant School and Netherhall School.

He completed his race in the summer in extreme heat and without a water pack which broke in the warm-up.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Maryport two weeks ago for his homecoming parade to celebrate his success.

Simon said: "It was nice to go back and it brought back a few memories.

"It's kind of daunting going back to your old school. It was a privilege and an honour to be asked to go in."

Simon is coached by Ian Thompson who is married to Paralympic legend Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The wheelchair racer is a former British championship rider, but was left paralysed from the chest down following in a motorbike accident in 2001.
