A notorious Carlisle nuisance who was given a chance to sort out his life with the help of a Christian charity is today back behind bars.

Andrew Bell, 40, was allowed to walk free from Carlisle Crown Court last month on condition that he live at the Betel Centre in Hexham.

The Christian charity works with people whose lives have been blighted by drink or drugs or both.

But Carlisle's Rickergate magistrates' court heard today that police found Bell outside the city's Cumberland Infirmary in the early hours of today.

That put him in breach of bail conditions imposed by Judge Peter Hughes QC. As a result of coming to Carlisle overnight, his place at the Betel Centre was no longer available, the court heard.

"He's a prolific offender," prosecutor John Moran told the court today.

The district judge remanded Bell in custody until he is sentenced on June 8 at the crown court.
