A night out ended disastrously for a young man who lost his temper after being told he could not take alcohol on to a bus.

Thomas Steven Garner, 24, was so annoyed after he was given that news that he lashed out at a glass security screen, which had to be replaced at a cost of £1,200.

At Carlisle's Rickergate magistrates' court, Garner, of Stanhope Road, Carlisle, admitted causing the glass security screen criminal damage on October 11.

Pam Ward, prosecuting, described how the defendant and one of his pals tried to board the Stagecoach bus at Richmond Green in Carlisle, but at the time they appeared to be under the influence.

They also had alcohol with them and wanted to take it with them on to the bus, said Mrs Ward. But the bus driver told them they they would not be allowed on while carrying drinks glasses.

“They were abusive to the driver,” said Mrs Ward.

They called him an offensive name and as he walked past Garner struck out at the driver's securing screen, damaging it.

“This caused distress to the driver who again told him to leave,” said Mrs Ward. As he got off the bus and stepped on to the pavement, the court heard, the defendant smashing his glass against the bus.

Later, when interviewed by the police, Garner said that he had been drinking at the Border Reiver pub but he had no clear recollection of the night out.

He felt embarrassed and ashamed of what he had done.

At the time, he was taking medication.

In court, Garner told District Judge Gerald Chalk: “I'd got a bit of bad news that day. All I can do is apologise. I'm ashamed of what I've done. It's embarrassing, to be honest.”

The judge told Garner: “You have caused significant damage to public property and caused distress to a public servant and to passengers in a restricted area.”

He imposed a ten week 7pm to 6am curfew, ordered that the defendant pay £1,200 compensation to Stagecoach, and £85 prosecution costs. Garner was also fined £50 for breaching a previously imposed conditional order of discharge.
