A play park in Carlisle has opened after a major refurbishment costing £33,000.

Worn out equipment at the park on Clark's Field in Stanwix, has been replaced with brand new equipment.

It consists of two new multi play units for infants and juniors, three swing sets including a basket swing to cater for all abilities, a see saw and a rocker.

Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust gave a grant of £20,000 towards the equipment and £5,500 came from a developer contribution.

Stanwix Urban ward councillor Elizabeth Mallinson also contributed from her ‘Community Project’ fund.

The project was carried out by Wicksteed Playgrounds who have been used to transform other playgrounds in Carlisle in recent years.

Councillor Chris Southward, who is responsible for environment and transport, said: "I am delighted to announce the re-opening of Clark’s Field play area after its recent refurbishment.

"The city council has invested almost half a million in children’s play areas in the last 12 months which is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the young people of this city.

"It is yet another example of how Carlisle is bouncing back from last year’s floods which devastated a number of our parks and play areas and which have now all been brought back to life, better than ever."

The playground at Bitts Park in Carlisle reopened in October after the floods.

It has lots of new special features including an ability swing, trampoline, swings, zip slide and massive spider like climbing frame.

Special matting has been put down on the ground to make it easier for future replacement, should the area flood again.

Children from Crosby-on-Eden School and invited guests helped open that play park.
