A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the A6.

Emergency services were called to the collision near Clifton, Penrith, at about 12.40pm yesterday.

A car and a motorbike were involved, leaving the motorcyclist - a man believed to be in his forties and from Lancashire - with serious injuries.

He was treated at the scene by the North West Ambulance Service and a doctor and paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance's Langwathby-based Pride of Cumbria helicopter.

The casualty was described as having "multiple injuries" and was flown directly to the trauma unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

His condition was last night described as stable.
