A callous thief who stole a 93-year-old Cumbrian woman's purse is being hunted by police.

The criminal struck outside the Booths Supermarket in Tithebarn Street, Keswick, at around 2.30pm on June 7.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said the pensioner had been looking at plants which were on display outside the supermarket when a man distracted her.

With his victim's attention diverted, the thief then stole a blue and green leather purse from the woman's handbag. "It contained cash and personal belongings," said the spokeswoman.

"Police want to hear from anybody who may have seen the theft, or who may have seen the male acting suspiciously."

The thief is described as being in his 40s, with short dark hair, and a goatee beard. He was wearing a grey jumper and a hooded top.

Anybody who can help police find the man should call police on 101, or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

You should then quote the police log number 125 of June 7.
