A man was rushed to hospital with "serious" head injuries after being involved with a collision with a car.

Emergency services were at the scene of the incident, outside the Spar on Newtown Road, Carlisle, just feet away from the Cumberland Infirmary.

The man, who is believed to be aged between 20 and 30, was taken to the hospital in Carlisle but was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The collision has also involved a black Peugeot car, being driven by a woman from the Carlisle area. She was not injured.

The crash happened about 12.10pm, yesterday, and the road was blocked for around two hours while investigations take place.

Early estimates from police at the scene said the road could have bee closed for a "number of hours".

Cumbria Police were asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Officers are asking for any witnesses to come forward and speak to them on 101.
