A man was warned by a judge he could be jailed after being found guilty of attacking his partner.

Carlisle Crown Court was told 57-year-old Alistair Brooks held a knife against the neck of Rachael Wright during a late night incident in their Penrith flat.

Before taking hold of the blade, Brooks had struck Miss Wright in the face "more than once". He dragged her along the floor and then stuck his finger in her right eye.

Brooks, of Eamont Bridge, near Penrith, denied assaulting Miss Wright, causing her actual bodily harm, on February 21.

He went on trial at the crown court earlier this week but was today unanimously found guilty of the offence by a jury of seven men and five women.

Recorder Michael Murray adjourned the case, asking for background information and an impact statement from the victim to be produced.

Brooks was bailed ahead of a sentencing hearing at the crown court on November 3.

But he was told by Recorder Murray: "You have been found guilty now of a very serious assault by a jury and your liberty is at risk.

"I haven't made up my mind what to do with you yet."
