A man is due to appear in court today charged with the murder of a Carlisle mum-of-two.

Miklos Verebes, 29, of no fixed address, was charged with murdering Melinda Korosi by police early yesterday morning.

He was remanded in custody and police say he is scheduled to appear before North Cumbria Magistrates' Court in the city today.

Police were called to Miss Korosi's home in Orton Road, on the western side of the city, at about 6am on Thursday.

The mother of two young children was in a critical condition.

The North West Ambulance Service was also alerted, but despite efforts to save her, the 33-year-old pizza shop worker from Hungary was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police have also charged Verebes with three counts of raping Miss Korosi.

These offences are alleged to have been carried out between October 2012 and July 2016.

Neighbours say Miss Korosi had lived in Orton Road for about two years and was described as polite, pleasant and always ready with a 'hello' when she spotted neighbours in the street.

She recently landed a job at Carlisle's Domino Pizza shop in London Road in and was a familiar figure in the area.

Residents in the street spoke of their shock and horror at the death, describing Orton Road as a normally quiet street.

Scenes of crime officers finally reduced the size of the police cordon in Orton Road yesterday, although Miss Korosi's house remained cordoned off in the evening.
