A RUNNER has collapsed and died while taking part in a Cumbrian fell face.

The man, in his 30s, died while competing in the annual Loughrigg Fell Race near Ambleside.
Off duty medics and volunteers from Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue tried unsuccessfully to revive the man, who is from the county.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also sent to the scene, alerted at around 7.30pm yesterday.

Police had also been called to reports that the man had collapsed while taking part in the four-mile event.

A spokesman for the charity confirmed that the runner was pronounced dead at the scene.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

The Loughrigg Fell Race began at Rothay Park in Ambleside at 7pm.
