A Wigton man has appeared before a court to face 18 child sex charges.

Craig Studholme, 51, now of Southend in the town, is charged with one allegation of raping a girl under 16, five counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and 12 allegations of sexual assault, including some on a child who was aged under 13.

There are two alleged victims.

At Carlisle's Magistrates' Court, the defendant spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges he faces.

He did not enter any pleas.

District Judge Gerald Chalk sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court for a hearing on September 16.

He imposed bail conditions which include a ruling that no child aged under 16 will be allowed to remain in the defendant's home after 9pm.
