A man has appeared in court charged with five offences, including rape and grievous bodily harm.

Jack Ian Walker, 18, of no fixed address, appeared at the magistrates' court in Workington this afternoon.

The five charges including rape after a woman walking a dog was allegedly attacked in Workington.

He faces charges of rape, attempted rape, grievous bodily harm and assault against. Walker is also charged with assaulting a police officer.

It comes after an incident which saw a woman attacked while walking her dog in the town late on Friday evening.

Walker, wearing a grey jumper, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the brief hearing.

He entered no pleas to the charges and the case was sent to Carlisle Crown Court, where Walker is due to appear on August 15.

He was remanded in custody.

The woman remained in hospital today with serious head injuries.
