A teenager is in police custody after reports of a man being stabbed in Workington.

Police were called to Firth View Walk yesterday afternoon after reports of an assault.

Officers arrived and gave first aid to a 31-year-old man who had suffered a suspected stab wound to the back.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before he was flown to Preston Hospital by air ambulance.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

A statement released by police late today says he is still in custody.

The injured man is still in hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Nobody else is being sought in relation to this incident.

The incident attracted a large crowd and, according to witnesses at the scene, a significant response from the emergency services.

Police urge that anyone who has information about what happened and who has yet to contact them should call 101.
They must quote incident number 168 of March 24 2017.
