A LORRY driver has appeared before magistrates in Carlisle accused of causing a motorist's death by dangerous driving.

Nigel James Stevens, 55, of Greenrigg Cottages, Wigton, is alleged to have caused the death by dangerous driving of David Joseph Mitchell on November 6 last year.

The accident that gave rise to the charge happened on the B5305 at Greenrigg Farm, near Wigton.

During a brief appearance at Carlisle's Rickergate courts complex, Stevens spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Mr Mitchell, 53, of Barugh Lane, Waverton, died after suffering serious injuries following the accident at Westward.

He was driving a Ford Transit van.

The defendant, represented by barrister Michael Knowles, was driving a Scania truck. During today's hearing Stevens entered no plea, his barrister telling the judge his client was not yet in a position to do so for legal reasons.

District Judge Gerald Chalk sent the case to Carlisle Crown for a hearing on January 9.
