Lifeboat crews have been stood down after carrying out a search for a person in the water on the Cumbrian coast.

Volunteer crews from Silloth and Workington were joined by an RNLI crew from Maryport during the search at Skinburness, near Silloth.

Maryport Inshore Rescue was also called to the scene and a search and rescue helicopter also called in.

Sue Kent, volunteer press officer for Silloth Lifeboat Station said that a member of the public had reported hearing someone in the water calling for help at around 5.15pm and raised the alarm.

She said: "She also thought she could see someone in the water."

However crews were stood down before 9pm due to fog.

Sue said: "The helicopter did a final sweep of the shoreline right around Grune Point. The four boats came in line abreast checking.

"The lady that reported it is adament in what she saw. Hopefully it was something else but we could get called out again."
