A drug-dealing former soldier has been spared prison by a judge who warned he was being given his "last chance".

Ian Flinn, 29, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today. He had admitted a cannabis supply crime and possessing amphetamine on January 9.

Police stopped Flinn on that date as he rode a pedal cycle. He was carrying a dealing kit which included bags of cannabis, scales and a mobile phone.

Flinn was said to have a "substantial" criminal record which was linked to his use of heroin after being discharged from the Army.

However, it was stressed that he needed help and was motivated to change his ways.

Judge Barbara Forrester imposed a six-month prison sentence which she suspended for two years.

Flinn, of Royal Drive, Egremont, must also complete unpaid work, a curfew and a rehabilitation requirement.

He was told by Judge Forrester: "This really is your last chance."
