A dangerous driver who caused a head-on smash which left another motorist with shocking injuries has been given a suspended jail term.

Jordan Bagley, 21, drove his Ford Fiesta too fast and the wrong side of the A5086 between Cleator and Egremont in June last year.

His car slammed into a slow-moving Ford Focus, driven by 61-year-old Colin Cowman, which was thrown on to its roof.

Carlisle Crown Court heard Mr Cowman suffered such multiple and serious injuries that he was in hospital for 19 days. He was then wheelchair-bound for six weeks.

Bagley, who admitted causing Mr Cowman serious injury by dangerous driving, was sentenced today.

The court heard the defendant showed "genuine" remorse."

After hearing mitigation, Judge Tony Lancaster suspended a year-long prison sentence for 18 months.

He gave Bagley, of Chaucer Avenue, Egremont, 200 hours' unpaid work and a three-month night-time curfew. He was also banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.
