Hundreds of visitors are flocking to the opening weekend of Workington's new £11.3m leisure centre and swimming pool.

The centre at Brow Top is open all weekend to let people visit the facilities including the gym, the 25m and training pools, fitness suites, steam and sauna unit, squash courts and outdoor 3G football pitches.

They can also find out more about the clubs and memberships available.

The new facilities replace the aging sports centre at Moorclose, which will now be demolished.

Allerdale Council is behind the new development.

Council leader Alan Smith said: "The turnout has been phenomenal and people have been coming in their droves.

"It is a fantastic facility and we're really proud that we're a council that can do things like this."

GLL are operating the leisure centre on behalf of Allerdale Council under its Better brand.

Staff are taking visitors on tours around the new centre as well as holding one-hour swimming lessons and taster sessions in a range of activities including Zumba, cycling, circuits and yoga.

The new centre was due to open a fortnight ago but the opening was delayed due to "snagging issues".

The centre is open until 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

It opens at 9.30am on Sunday with sessions scheduled to take place including:

10:30-11:30 Aerobic Strength & Tone, for the over 50s;

11.00-12.00 Group Cycle;

12:00-12:45 Zumba Gold®;

13:00-14:00 Zumba;

13:00-13:45 Advanced Group Cycle;

14:00-15:00 Strong by Zumba ®;

14:00-15:00 Bodyweight Circuit for Juniors;

15:00-16:00 Yoga.

The 3G pitches are open from 10am until 4.30pm.

Visitors can also swim in the main 25m pool between 10am and 4pm on Sunday, but timed sessions may have to operate to ensure all who want to swim can do so.

The smaller teaching pool will have splash time sessions for families.
