FIREFIGHTERS spent several hours at the scene of a blaze in a log cabin.

Emergency services were called at about 4.30pm yesterday to a small fire in the living room of the property on Black Dub Road, leading from Carrock Fell Junction south to Carlatton Mill, near to Heads Nook.

The occupants were out of the building.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to put out the fire.

A crew from Carlisle east fire station were on scene for 90 minutes, while firefighters from Brampton were on scene for longer to ensure the blaze was out.

It was the second house fire for the emergency services yesterday.

They were called to a home in Armathwaite at about 6.50am.

A pile of flammable material, which had been left too close to the fire, ignited overnight.

The man inside was woken by his smoke alarms.

He dialed 999 before attempting to tackle the fire himself, eventually succeeding.

However, as a result he needed medical treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.

He was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary as a precaution.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Fire and Rescue Service warned people to be aware of what they place beside a fire or heater, to ensure it does not catch alight.

The importance of working smoke alarms - and checking them regularly - was also highlighted.
