A thug who violently attacked a woman has been told by a judge he is in the "last chance saloon".

Cyril Greer, 34, who has 120 offences to his name, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court after head-butting and punching his Wendy Jones, after the pair had been out drinking in the city on September 2.

He had lashed out during an angry late night outburst as the pair argued.

During a previous crown court hearing, Kim Whittlestone, prosecuting, said: "Whilst that struggle was ongoing he head-butted her to her forehead. That was a significant injury and caused her to bleed profusely from her forehead."

He also delivered a number of punches.

Greer pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Jones, causing her actual bodily harm and was due to have been sentenced in December.

However, Judge Peter Davies postponed the punishment for assessments to determine whether a non-custodial sentence could be passed.

Lawyer Jamie Baxter, defending, said Greer was "motivated" to comply with a community order.

"Perhaps now is the time to give it a go, to turn it around," said Mr Baxter.

Having heard submissions on Greer's behalf, Judge Davies opted not to impose a immediate prison sentence. But he conceded he remained sceptical about the defendant's likely success.

"It is going to be tough," the judge said of the community order. "If you and I meet (again) you will be going to custody. This is last chance saloon.

"I don't have a great deal of confidence in you but I am going to give you a final chance."

Greer, of Dalton Avenue, Carlisle, was handed a 21-month prison sentence which was suspended for two years.

He must complete 180 hours' unpaid work within a year, and given a 50-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

In addition, he was made subject to a 10-year restraining order which prohibits him from contacting Miss Jones in any way.
