A football coach who failed to provide a breath specimen has been banned from driving.

Lee Foster, 40, of Croasdale Avenue, Whitehaven, appeared before magistrates in Workington on Friday and admitted a charge of failure to provide a specimen for analysis on August 29.

Diane Jackson, prosecuting, said Foster was seen by police officers mounting a kerb while driving at night. The officers followed him until he pulled into a driveway and left his car. They approached him and noticed he was unsteady on his feet.

After breath-testing Foster and taking him into custody, he was asked to provide another specimen and failed to do so.

Mike Pope, defending, told the court that Boyd, who coaches Whitehaven Amateur Football Club, suffered from anxiety which had prevented him from providing a specimen. He said it had not been a deliberate attempt to mislead officers.

Mr Pope said: "I don't think you'll get a more apologetic defendant.

"He says he panicked when he stopped and doesn't dispute what the police are saying. When he got back to the police station, he was still in distress."

Pope said the defendant had tried to provide a specimen but couldn't.

He added: "The sad reality is that as a result of this mistake he will probably lose his job."

Magistrates sentenced Boyd to a 16-month driving ban and fined him £260. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
