A WORKING dog was killed during a hit-and-run incident on a rural road.

Police want to trace the driver of a vehicle who knocked down and killed an eight-year-old Border collie on the B6357, between Hollee and Irvington, near Kirkpatrick Fleming, then sped off after the collision.

The collision happened around 10.15am on yesterday while a farmer was moving cows in the area and the dog was struck by a vehicle.

It is described as being a black-coloured Mitsubishi pick-up with part of the registration number being SB10. The driver stopped briefly then took off.

Constable Emma-Jayne Neylon, who is based in Langholm, said: "This was an horrific incident for the farmer to witness made worse by the driver failing to stop after the crash.

"The driver of the pick-up is described as being male, in his late twenties, white, of medium build with a bit of a belly, about six feet tall, with short brown hair and a beard.

"We ask that anyone who can help us trace the driver of this vehicle to get in touch through 101, and indeed would ask that the driver of the vehicle himself get in touch with us regarding the incident."
