A Cumbrian man's toys he bought as a teenager are now worth hundreds of pounds.

Pete Smith, 78 of Workington came along to the Antiques Roadshow, at Holker Hall, with a collection of Meccano and dinky toys he had bought almost 60 years ago.

Mr Smith came with his daughter Catherine to meet some of the experts of his favourite TV show.

He was delighted to find out that the silver Shetland flying boat he had kept in his attic for decades was now worth £250, and the dinky toys that had only cost 1.s 6.d were now worth £40.

Mr Smith that found out that in their original boxes, toys like that could be worth almost £80 to some collectors.

Dozens of experts from the long-running BBC series were on hand yesterday to put a value on items as diverse as teddy bears and firemen's helmets.

The show has been on the air for 39 years and regularly attracts six million viewers.
