Cumbria's police commissioner has been caught speeding.

Peter McCall issued a statement this morning, saying he was "embarrassed" by the offence but pledged he would not "shy away from difficult issues".

Mr McCall was caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone outside the county while on holiday in August.

He said: "I believe that you should always speak the truth no matter how difficult a situation.

"I have referred myself to the police and crime panel and will make a statement to the panel at their meeting on October 11.

"I have notified the Independent Police Complaints Commission about this matter and expect the panel to formally refer it to them.

"Speeding is one of the consistent issues that people raise with me across the county.

"I am fully aware of the negative impact that speeding can have on peoples’ lives and that makes the disappointment even more hard hitting for me."

He added that he had opted to attend a speed awareness course in the next few weeks.
