Cumbrian singer Jolan Gidney-Craigen starred in tonight's episode of The Voice, with three of the TV show's four judges fighting to get him in their team.

After clinching him for his team, Ricky Wilson told the 22-year-old singer: "That was shockingly brilliant."

The singer, from Moor Row, near Whitehaven, wowed the judges with his version of Terence Trent D’Arby's Wishing Well.

Three of them - Wilson, Paloma Faith, and Boy George - were united in their view that Jolan is good enough to be the show's outright winner.

Faith praised his voice for its "amazing range."

Wilson summed up Jolan's rendition of the song with one word: "Flawless "

Jolan told in an emotional pre-performance interview how his mum, Joanne, had proudly watched his performance when he entered The Voice two years ago.

"It's going to be for her," he said.

He took a step back from performing following his mum's sudden death later that year.

“Reflecting on it now, a lot has happened, with my mum passing away. I realised I wasn’t ready for it then,” he said. “Recently, I’ve thought why not try for it again, so I went for it.

“It was so nerve-wracking but I felt more ready this time and I felt I’d found my voice. My nerves were calmer this time.

“It was exciting to see the new coaches Paloma Faith and Boy George.

“They are all geniuses and bring different aspects to the show,” he said.

A big impression was also made tonight by 26-year-old Rick Snowdon - who overcame a weight problem to turn himself into a likely rock star of tomorrow.

As with Jolan, three of the judges wanted him but Faith won out.

Earlier in the show, 28-year-old Mia Sylvester also impressed the judges with her performance, clinching a turn from Ricky. Duo Scott and Vicky impressed Will.i.am. enough to make him turn.

Former Eurovision entrant Paul Phoenix was praised but the judges failed to turn while 28-year-old Eli Crips, from Manchester, gave a stunning performance, which eased Boy George. He liked her voice, saying he thought it "androgenous". A big impression was also made by JJ Soulx - she was fought over by Ricky and Poloma, with Ricky declaring confidently that she has star quality. Poloma remarked that she was " drop dead gorgeous." She went with Poloma. Supermarket worker Theo Lewellyn also impressed Poloma, who told him: "You have an absolutely beautiful voice." The tough side of The Voice was evident as the judges - despite being entranced by the unique voice of Jordan Gray - inexplicably failed to turn. It was a similar story for 73-year-old veteran crooner Mike Berry.
