Members of a Cumbrian yacht club set sail on Ullswater in memory of a double Olympic medallist.

Andrew Simpson, known as 'Bart', claimed gold in the men's star sailing event at the 2008 games in Beijing and followed it up with a silver in the same event in London four years later.

But three years ago, the 36-year-old tragically lost his life when his team yacht capsized in the San Francisco Bay as they were making preparations for the America's Cup.

More than 60 members of Ullswater Yacht Club joined more than 7,000 sailors from 58 countries to take part in Bart's Bash, an annual event held in memory of Andrew. The event raises funds for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, with clubs all over the world holding a special race on the same weekend in September.

Forty-two boats descended on Ullswater to race on a simple upwind, downwind course before enjoying an evening meal with entertainment. The following day a homemade cake stall was also set up, with the club raising more than £550 for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

Taking part were father and daughter Andrew and Honore Bailey, from Carlisle. The family only joined the club two years ago but Andrew said he was pleased to be part of such a special event.

“Bart's Bash was the first race I ever did two years ago,” he said. “My confidence on the water has improved every year thanks to everyone at UYC.

“It's been the best season I have had since joining and I hope there are many, many more to come.”

Honore, who is 10 years old, was the youngest competitor at the event, crewing in a Laser 2000

After two laps, the winners on handicap were Matty and James Lyons in a 49er, with Dave and Sue Giles finishing in second place in a Flying Fifteen. Jon Abbatt, racing in a Laser, finished in third place.

All timings have been sent to the Bart's Bash organisers and each competitor will be given an overall worldwide placing.
