A Cumbrian bed and breakfast has been ranked among the world's most outstanding places to stay.

Thornleigh Guesthouse in Keswick has been named the eight best-rated B&B in the world in TripAdvisor's 2017 Travellers' Choice Awards.

The four star, Silver Award guest house, in Bank Street, has beaten a host of B&Bs around the world to be recognised among the world's top 10.

It's also rated sixth best in Europe, fourth best in the UK, and is one of 10 winning properties in the county to scoop an impressive 18 awards in total.

Owners Clare and David Petty said: "We are delighted to be recognised by TripAdvisor as a 2017 Travellers’ Choice Award winner.

"A huge thank you to all of our lovely guests for choosing to stay with us and writing such wonderful reviews.”

The hallmarks of the Travellers' Choice Awards winner are remarkable service, quality and value.

The awards highlight the world's most outstanding properties in eight categories - Top Hotels, Luxury, Bargain, Small, Service, B&Bs and Inns, Romance and Family - and are based on the millions of reviews and opinions left collected in a single year from the travel planning and booking site.

They take into account the quality and quantity of customer reviews specific to each category.

The Grasmere Hotel was named the 10th most romantic hotel in Europe and third in the UK. It also celebrated awards in the Best Service and Bargain categories, taking 13th and 7th in the UK respectively.

Also acknowledged in the B&B category this year were Ambleside’s Riverside and HillCrest22 Guest House in Keswick which ranked,

respectively, in 11th and 22nd place.

In Workington the Hall Park Hotel was named 21st best Bargain hotel.

In Windermere four hotels - Applegarth Villa and Restaurant, Cedar Manor Hotel and Restaurant, Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, and Cragwood Country House Hotel - scooped seven awards between them.

The music-themed Aria Hotel Budapest is the world's top hotel for 2017.
