Hundreds of people gathered at Carlisle's Citadel station this afternoon to welcome the historic Flying Scotsman to the city.

The steam locomotive had been due to visit last month, but problems with its brakes left many disappointed.

However on this occasion there was plenty to cheer about as it made its way in to platform three, pulling the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express.

The train left London's Euston station just after 7am pulled by diesel trains before the Flying Scotsman took over at Carnforth. It then made its way over Shap summit before arriving in Carlisle around 25 minutes after the expected time of 12.41pm.

However, the crowd that had gathered remained patient and were glad to see the locomotive finally arrive in Carlisle.

Rail enthusiast Brian Thompson had traveled from his home near Whitehaven to see the train.

The 62-year-old said: "I came last month when it was due to be here and was disappointed that it wasn't.

"It's great that it's here now, though. The Flying Scotsman is one of the most iconic trains in the history of British railways."

Anna Doran, general manager at Virgin Trains, said: “It has been amazing to welcome the Flying Scotsman to Carlisle, as part of its first main line test run. Being lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the this world famous locomotive on the West Coast before its run on the East Coast is something the Virgin Trains Anglo Scot team will never forget.

"We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming passengers of the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express and rail enthusiasts to Carlisle station. To see the excitement on people’s faces was fantastic.”
