Community spirit was well and truly alive in Workington, when the town's football club kicked off a fun-filled open day.

Despite rain during yesterday afternoon, the stadium was filled with families as the club hosted a disability football tournament.

Moor Row singer Jolan Gidney-Craigen, who finished runner-up on the hit BBC show The Voice, was also on hand, while Workington Reds took the opportunity to unveil their brand new kit for the upcoming season to fans.

Sunday's event featured a raft of entertainment for children throughout the day, with a bouncy castle, side stalls and a competition to see who had the fastest shot.

The event was organised by Alan Airey, a fan and volunteer who is also a member of the Reds Development Group.

"What we're trying to do is show everyone that the club is very much part of the local community," he told the News & Star .

"It's the third year that we've held an open day and, despite the weather, we were really pleased with the number of people that turned out for the event.

"It was great that Jolan came down to help as well, and I think the people that came down were pleased to meet him."

The Reds junior side were in attendance but Alan said that promoting football among disabled people in the community is something that he hopes the club will continue doing in future.

"It's something I myself am particularly keen to push for," he added.

"We had a tournament with three five-a-side teams - West Coast Warriors, West Cumbria United and Carlisle City - and they all seemed to enjoy it.

"It'd be great if we were able to keep promoting disability football."
