Plans for a pedestrian crossing over Castle Way in Carlisle have been approved.
City councillors decided to give the toucan crossing over the busy dual carriageway the go ahead after a long debate.
Views both for and against the crossing, which will join Castle Street and the castle, were aired but when it came to the vote, seven were in favour, one was against and four people abstained.
Councillors in favour of the crossing said it would reconnect the city and the castle, boosting business in the area and give cyclists, disabled people, those in wheelchairs and people with prams easy access over the road.
Those against argued the three crossings available already were sufficient, the crossing will make it harder for traffic joining Castle Way from West Tower Street and raised concerns about risks to health for car fumes.
