Carlisle’s bandstand will be transformed into Narnia, as Christmas in the City is celebrated with a bang.

The people who organised a huge street party in Carlisle for the Queen’s 90th birthday in the summer are at it again.

This time, the group is planning two days of festive celebrations over the weekend of December 10 and 11.

Miriam Lowe, who is one of the organisers, said: “This is our second street party for the whole city.

“There will be live music, a fireside cafe, Christmas drinks and treats.

“The bandstand will be transformed into Narnia so the children will enjoy that and there will be snow machines. Those feeling brave can even take a ride on the reindeer rodeo.”

Miriam continued: “When we held the Queen’s 90th birthday party we asked people to bring along a cake, so that we could serve literally hundreds of slices.

“We are asking for the same this time. It would appear that the people of Carlisle love a cake with icing - coffee and walnut cake was a particular favourite in the summer.

“This time it could be a chocolate cake with a reindeer on or some mince pies or anything festive really.”

Staff from Hollywood Nails will also be doing festive nail painting.

“Obviously with this being winter we have marquees so people can stay dry and warm," Miriam told the News & Star .

“There will also be a big sing-a-long on both days to spread some festive cheer."

The free event is funded by a group of local churches, Carlisle City Council and participating groups.

The event also incorporates the Carlisle Santa Dash.

It takes place on Sunday, December 11. Dashing Santas can complete a 5k run at 10.30am or a 2k walk at 11.30am.

Admission for the Santa Dash is £12 for adults or £6 for 11 to 16-year-olds. All runners must wear a santa suit.

Those taking part in the 5K can join friends and family in the fun run/walk at no extra cost.

The price for taking part in just the fun run/walk is £10 for adults or £5 for under 16’s.

All profits go to Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.
