A pensioner is facing prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a child.

Geoffrey Blacklock, 68, went on trial at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this week.

He denied six indecent assault charges relating to incidents in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

But after hearing all the evidence in the case, a jury today convicted Blacklock of each of the offences.

In each case, guilty verdicts were returned on a majority of 10 to two.

Giving evidence during the trial, the victim spoke from behind a screen about the abuse. This left her needing counselling later in adult life.

Police began an investigation into Blacklock's criminal conduct last year after the woman plucked up the courage to tell a third party what had happened.

Blacklock, of Hawthorn Grove, Carlisle, was remanded in custody by Judge Barbara Forrester and will be sentenced on December 12.

Judge Forrester asked for a background report to be prepared by the probation service. But she said an "immediate custodial sentence is the most likely outcome".
