Police have released a 23-year-old man who was arrested after a young woman was raped in a Carlisle park.

The suspect has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

The police investigation was launched after the 19-year-old woman was attacked in St James' Park, Denton Holme, in the early hours of April 28 – at some time between 3.50am and 4.30am, say police.

In the hours after it happened, police confirmed that the woman had earlier been out in Carlisle city centre.

The suspect had dark hair, and was wearing jeans and grey top.

Police appealed for anyone who saw someone matching this description walking in Denton Holme or the surrounding area of St James' Park to contact them.

The man who was arrested is understood to be from Peterborough.

The park was sealed off for ten hours as officers hunted for clues.
