A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a 39-year-old Carlisle man was left seriously injured.
The alleged attack happened in Petteril Bank Road, Harraby, shortly before 10pm yesterday.
Police have not released the victim's name but they confirmed that he has been transferred to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
He is understood to have sustained a head injury.
Residents in the area reported that officers have been in the area today collecting CCTV recordings in the hope of gathering evidence.
A spokeswoman for the force said that that a 31-year-old man from Carlisle has been arrested and was today due to be quizzed by detectives.
Police are particularly keen to speak to two men who helped the victim to his feet after the assault.
The spokeswoman added: "It is believed that the two men could have witnessed the assault and can hopefully provide vital information.
"Police are encouraging anyone who was in the area to come forward regardless of how big or small they believe the information to be."
