Care home workers have been hailed as “truly remarkable” with a string of staff singled out for special praise.

Barn Close in Carlisle was rated as outstanding for its responsiveness following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Workers were praised for the dignity and respect in which residents are treated - with their boss overjoyed at the findings.

In four other areas - safe, care, effective and well-led - the Stanwix-based home was rated as good.

The report stated: “The service was extremely responsive.

“People enjoyed a wide range of activities based on their likes and preferences, which made a great impact on their lives and wellbeing.

“People and their relatives knew how to raise concerns. Complaints and concerns were dealt with quickly and efficiently.

“Care plans were concise and reflected people’s needs accurately.”

The inspectors’ report said staff continuously sought to improve and develop the service.

Commenting on their relationship with residents, it said they did so in a kind and professional manner.

It said care plans, which were subject to regular reviews, were person- centred and showed individual preferences were taken into account.

Meanwhile inspectors recognised the service had a high level of community engagement which included fundraising for both local and national charities.

Manager Jean James said: “I’m elated. I really am. I think it’s justified because we work so hard.

“The staff are absolutely excellent. They’re very flexible and they’re very dedicated.

“The senior team in the care office are motivated and positive and all the staff are quite happy to keep working to move the home forward.

“There are so many changes in care and they’re all excellent at supporting the home.

“I’m so proud of all the staff.”

Ms James felt it was the appropriate time to recognise the contribution of the senior team.

She handed out special achievement awards to deputy manager Valerie Dobson, senior carer Anita Stubbs and care officer Jemma Curran.

Dawn Shearman, a senior carer, was also awarded for her efforts.

John Mallinson, chairman of the Henry Lonsdale Charitable Trust, which also runs a care home at Rosehill, said: “The outcome is truly remarkable, especially for the category it was awarded for and that is basically looking after people and making sure they’re happy staying with us in their home.”
