Two women have been arrested following an assault in Carlisle.

Cumbria police have been at the scene on Mardale Road, Raffles.

The street has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians at the junction with Creighton Avenue.

Police were called at approximately 6am yesterday and residents said the area was cordoned off at around 7.30am.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria police said: "A 21-year-old man, from Carlisle, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which are not life threatening.

"Two women, aged 19 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm."

Residents earlier reported that a man had been stabbed by a woman. They also said they had not heard anything suspicious until police arrived on the scene.
