A SONG that football fans hoped would be Christmas number one has finished in the top 10 of the iTunes chart on Christmas Day.

The Dave Clark Five song Glad All Over was adopted by Rangers fans in tribute to their new cult hero and former Carlisle United striker Joe Garner.

The lyrics have been changed in the song from “I’m Glad All Over to” “We’ve got… Joey Garner”.

Ibrox fans launched the campaign with punters uniting online using the Twitter hashtag #JoeyGarnerChristmasNumberOne.

Following the strong campaign, the single eventually made it into the top 40 of the official chart at number 31.

But on Christmas Day, the song rose on iTunes to number six, just behind X Factor winner Matt Terry's single, When Christmas.

Clean Bandit continued their domination of the charts to claim the accolade of Christmas number one for 2016. The British electronic music trio's Rockabye, featuring rapper Sean Paul and singer Anne-Marie, has been in the singles charts for nine weeks and in the top spot for seven.

The group fended off stiff competition from the Rag'n'Bone Man, One Direction's Louis Tomlinson, Little Mix and an old festive favourite, All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey, to score the prestigious title.

Even though he didn't make the number one spot in the official charts, The Dave Clark Five frontman saluted Rangers fans for sending the song and 1960s hit to the No.1 spot on iTunes in the week before Christmas.

And he revealed it’s the first time he’s topped the charts since the song first toppled The Beatles in 1964.

Garner joined Carlisle United in 2007 for a club record fee of £140,000. Less than a year after joining he was sold to Notts Forest for a fee of £1.14m.

He scored his first league goal for United at Brunton Park on February 10, 2007, in a game against Yeovil Town, which Carlisle lost 4-1.

He has since become a cult hero with fans since his summer move from Preston.
