A BURGLAR who broke into a flood-hit Carlisle hair salon has been sent to prison.

Grant Stewart, 35, threw bricks at the window of the Glamour Nail, Hair and Beauty in Broad Street at around 3am on February 25 before entering the premises where he took five pairs of hair straighteners.

However Stewart was spotted by security guards patrolling the flood-affected area and was found hiding behind a skip close by with his £500 loot in a carrier bag.

Stewart initially denied being responsible for the burglary, but eventually pleaded guilty to the offence.

Judge Tony Lancaster handed down a 27-week jail sentence at Carlisle Crown Court today.

He heard Stewart, of Gilsland Road in the city's Durranhill had committed the crime after lapsing back into alcohol use.
