Brown water has been reported coming out some taps in Carlisle.

Water company United Utilities says it is aware of the issue in the CA3 area, but has moved to reassure residents it is nothing to worry about.

A spokesman said: "We have received calls to let us know some people are finding when they turn their tap on the water is discoloured or brown in colour.

"This has happened because of a disturbance to the pipes in the area. Our pipes have naturally occurring sediments and minerals at the bottom which can get disturbed every now and then.

"We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time."

People can help the issue by letting the cold water tap run at a slight trickle until the water runs crystal clear again.

The spokesman added that an inspector is monitoring the situation to ensure it resolves itself.
