FORMER world boxing champion Nigel Benn is coming to Carlisle for a night of entertainment.

Benn, nicknamed the "Dark Destroyer" for his punching power and aggressive fighting style, will entertain guests at The Halston on Saturday, June 4.

The 51-year-old former WBO middlewight and WBC super-middleweight champion will treat guests to tales of his life inside and outside the ring.

He was renowned for his rivalry with fellow Brit Chris Eubank at a time when big fights were regularly broadcast on terrestrial TV, drawing huge audiences.

Other guests on the night include boxers Robin Reid and Irishman Big Joe Egan.

Reid won a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. As a professional, he won the WBC super middleweight title in 1996.

After his professional boxing career, Benn became a DJ. He later appeared in the first series of the ITV reality TV show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

Benn has since developed a strong faith and is a born again Christian.

He now lives with his family in Sydney, Australia, where he has been studying theology, sports coaching and sports development.

He was entered into the World Boxing Council (WBC) Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013 and was honoured alongside Calzaghe as the WBC's greatest super middleweight champion in history.

Benn is also a Patron of the Shannon Bradshaw Trust, a children's charity based in the North West of England, helping children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Benn's autobiography, published in 2001, is called Dark Destroyer.

His visit to the city follows hot on the heels of boxer Joe Calzaghe who visited the Halston last year and American fighter Sugar Ray Leonard who entertained guests in 2014.

Tickets for the Nigel Benn event cost £60 which includes a two-course meal or £75 for a two-course meal and a photo.
