Bomb disposal experts have carried out two controlled explosions on the beach near Maryport.

It followed the discovery of a suspected hand grenade and flares yesterday afternoon.

A member of the public reported it to the Coastguard, and the Maryport Inshore Rescue boat was deployed.

The team assessed the device and secured the area.

Bomb disposal experts were then called in to deal with it.

They carried out the controlled explosions just after 1pm today.

A Coastguard spokesman said it is not uncommon for old world war munitions like that found to wash up the Solway area.

If anyone finds a suspicious device they should not touch it, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
