An Australian tourist has had to be airlifted from a Lake District fell.

The woman injured her ankle whilst coming down Gamlin End from High Crag.

She was on the coast to coast route with her husband, who was able to continue down to the valley to raise the alarm.

Members of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team headed up the fell, from Gatesgarth at Buttermere.

They arrived at the top as the North West Air Ambulance landed on top of High Crag after setting off from its base in Blackpool.

The woman was carried back to the top of the fell by members of the mountain rescue team before she was flown to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven for treatment.

Yesterday's incident follows two earlier call-outs for the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.

On Friday, volunteers helped two walkers who had become cragfast in the Green Crag area on Haystacks above Buttermere.

In a separate incident at the same time, a woman was lost in mist whilse on the coast to coast walk in Ennerdale.

The two cragfast walkers were short-roped back to safety along with their two dogs.

The lost woman was found using a smartphone app called Sarloc - technology which helps pinpoint the location of a mobile phone.

A statement about Friday's incident from Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team said: "The lost lady was located using SARLOC, which saved us a lot of searching, as she was some way off her intended route.

"Team members went out to find her and walked her back to the valley."
