An arson investigation has been launched by police after a car was set on fire in Carlisle in the early hours of this morning.

The vehicle - a Vauxhall Insignia - was parked on Lindisfarne Street, off London Road. Officers, along with firefighters from the city's east and west stations, were called to the scene just after 1.30am.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "It's believed a brick was thrown through the car window and then the car was set alight from the inside.

"The incident is being treated as a suspected arson and Cumbria Police are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area to get in touch."

Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 10 of February 22.
