TK Maxx will create up to 40 jobs if it gets the go-ahead for its first store in west Cumbria.

The global chain has applied to open a shop at Derwent Howe Retail Park, Workington, opposite Pets At Home and Currys.

Plans have been submitted to Allerdale council on behalf of Land Securities and consultation started on Tuesday.

The popular retailer predominantly sells clothing but also offers furniture and homeware.

A planning and retail statement submitted as part of the application by Indigo Planning said TK Maxx, which has a branch in Carlisle, has been interested in Workington for a number of years.

Suzanne Caldwell, deputy chief executive at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said: “TK Maxx will be a valuable addition to the retail offer in Workington.

“It will help to attract shoppers to the town and encourage local people to shop in Workington rather than travel further afield.”

Andrew Lawson, who represents the ward on the town council, said it was exciting news.

He added: "Obviously I always welcome the opportunity for new shopping developments in Workington and across west Cumbria.

"New jobs in the area is always a positive and that we can attract big companies like this is a brilliant sign."

The development, which would be about 10,000 sq ft, would result in a reduction of 25 regular spaces on the current car park, but an extra space for disabled motorists and 10 more cycle spaces would be created.

People have until Tuesday, June 20 to comment.
